McDougall Interview with Dr. Roy Swank, MD on Multiple Sclerosis
http://www.drmcdougall.com/res_swank.html
Here's a quote from the link -
"At the University of Oregon, we found that patients who adopted a very low-fat diet, following an early diagnosis of MS, had a 95% chance of remaining free from further disability. When we compared our patients, after 35 years; the group who strictly followed a low-fat diet had a death rate of 31%. They not only avoided death from MS, but also death from heart and other diseases. Those who followed a high-fat diet had a death rate of about 80%." (Emphasis Added)

Here are a quote from this excellent Blog -
"All of these organizations make these recommendations in favor of eating more plants (carbohydrates) and less animal products (fat and protein) because, so far, we don't have any high quality data supporting the claim that low carbohydrate, flesh-based diets have similar effects to plant-based diets. On the contrary, the preponderance of evidence, most of it produced by people who have not declared any commitment to animal rights, points in the direction of the conclusion that meat-based low carbohydrate diets promote the major causes of death." Dietary saturated fat/cholesterol, but not unsaturated fat or starch, induces C-reactive protein associated early atherosclerosis and ectopic fat deposition in diabetic pigs

Here's a quote from the link -
"Dietary saturated fat/cholesterol induces inflammation, atherosclerosis and ectopic fat deposition whereas an equally high dietary unsaturated fat load does not induce these abnormalities and shows beneficial effects on postprandial glycaemia in diabetic pigs." (Emphasis Added)

Traditional Diets in Asia Pacific and Implications for Health, and the History of Disease Prevention

You certainly can develop Atherosclerosis on a Low Carb Meat Based Diet without ever touching a morsel of modern processed food.
A few quotes from one of my favorite blogs -
"I previously reviewed the health of a number of primitive populations, including evidence from numerous preserved Inuit (Eskimo) mummies that predate western contact, demonstrating that without consuming a morsel of modern processed food throughout their entire lifetimes, the traditional Inuit developed atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, breast cancer and numerous other chronic and degenerative diseases that are evidently partly explained by their carnivorous diet. " (Emphasis Added)
"In 1949, a government survey found that in Okinawa, known to have the highest concentration of centenarians in the world, the population consumed about 85% of their total energy intake from carbohydrates, with the staple at the time being the sweet potato. The dietary survey also showed that the Okinawans derived about 9% of their energy intake from protein and less than 4% of energy from all sources of animal foods combined (Table 1).10 These findings were largely consistent with previous dietary surveys dating back to 1879 and 1919."
